Forward and Reverse Genetics in Crop Breeding

Ability to identify, study, create and utilize genetic variation are the fundamental aspects and landmarked the development of human beings.

Forward Genetics

Traditional or forward genetics has its roots since man’s first attempts since domestication of plants and animals. Selection of novel and preferred traits from large populations and maintained for future propagation, leading to the first cultivars. 

Reverse Genetics

DNA discovery as heritable material marked the beginning of development of reverse genetics whereby targeted regions in the genome are extracted to test and utilize functional variation in genes.  

Recent development in high-throughput and automated phenomics enable more efficient forward genetic; Recombinant DNA and sequencing technologies provided the means to recover induced lesions causative for observed heritable phenotype trait differences.
